Salem, IA
The small city of Salem, IA, is part of Henry County, located about 12 miles southwest of Mt. Pleasant and a short distance west of Iowa Highway 27. Salem covers less than a single mile of land area just twenty miles from the Missouri border, housing fewer than 500 people.
Salem was settled originally by Quakers in the 19th century, with Aaron Street and Isaac Pigeon becoming the community’s first citizens when the village was laid out in 1839. Today, the home of noted abolitionist Henderson Lewelling, as well as the 1918 Holtkamp Round Barn, are both listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Main Street runs north-south through the center of town, past the Salem Veterans Memorial and Lewelling Quaker Museum.
