The small city of New London is located in Henry County, Iowa, about nine miles southeast of Mt. Pleasant off US-34. New London houses a population of less than 1,900 people and covers just one square mile of land.
The community was originally called Dover, named after its founder who came from Illinois in 1833. New London was then officially established in 1861. Today, Pine Street leads into the center of town from the highway, with Dover Museum located on Main Street, just a few steps from New London Veteran Memorial Park. John & Lavina Bangs House and McClellan’s General Store are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The city maintains a recreation park and community hall for the public’s enjoyment.
